We Were Children

I remember the hills upon the seaside
The waves upon the sand
The wind upon our faces
The light upon the land

We were children of the Goddess
Damnu the Dark, Danu the Light
We were bound to the earth and each other
And worshipped the day and night

The trees grew thick on the flatlands
The grasses rich and green
The roots of trees stretched deeply
Alive, thick and strong and unseen.

The Seelie roamed the plains and the forests
Beneath skies stained a pure blue
They danced up on the lake shores
The children of Danu

The UnSeelie pressed the hills and the mountains
They took the death and brought morning dew
They were the darkness that lies within all
The children of Damnu

We were children of the Goddess
Damnu the Dark, Danu the Light
We were bound to the earth and each other
And worshipped the day and night

Before the sleep of the Goddess
Before the love of Death
Before the joining of creators
Before the eternal rest

We trusted all in creation
We dined with our blood brothers
We were judged by the merit of our being
Not by our forefathers

We were children of the Goddess
Damnu the Dark, Danu the Light
We were bound to the earth and each other
And worshipped the day and night

That was before their arrival
The fall of the winged warriors
Before the coming of the Seelie
And the Dark Court’s horrors

Before the wars and the darkness
Before the blood and hate
Before the crash of the ages
Before the damning fates

Now the hill lays silent in its hollow
Its people grow dark and feared
While our temples crumble above us
And no one remains that cares

We were children of the Goddess
Damnu the Dark, Danu the Light
We were bound to the earth and each other
And worshipped the day and night
