Cnuic Na Sidhe

Roughly translated, it means The Fairy Hill or Hill of Fairy.

Throughout history, tales of the 'wee' people have been told; mischievous little imps with gossamer wings that hide in old oak trees and play practical jokes to amuse their immortal lives. However, through time the true stories of these creatures have been lost.

We now picture fairies as these bright little creatures, sparkles of magic never quite seen with cute little faces and sprinklings of pixie dust to make our dreams come true or lift our very bodies from off the ground. They have become pink and purple, soft and bright, kind and good. Granters of wishes, objects of delight- they have come to be something as opposite in nature as day and night.

The Faerie were the creatures of night, often times cruel and twisted, powerful and whimsical. They stole children to keep for their own, leaving behind ugly creatures in their place. They were the makers of dark magic. Circular formations... mushroom rings, oaken circles, even the may pole traditions of spring, all trace back to the circles danced by the creatures of Faerie; shapes and sighs and sounds designed to lure the innocent into their clutches, drawing them down into the dark world of the Sidhe where they were tortured with pain or pleasure. In the end, those poor mortal souls were left dying to return home or begging to stay, forever changed for better or worse all at the whim of the immortal.

They were the eaters of flesh and drinkers of blood. They were the creatures beneath the bed, the nails scratching at your window in the dead of night, the faces gazing down at you from the knot holes of the wood beams over your bed, the creak upon the floorboard outside your room. They were viewed by some as demons and by others to be the Old Gods of religions so long forgotten as to have never existed in the first place.

Those within my pages are but a shadow of what the true Sidhe may have been and is just one of a thousand stories, each very similar describing how they may have become what they are, or were, or may yet be some day.

And it all starts with but one question...

If you were a creature of immeasurable power whose life may never know an end... what would you find to believe in?
